tales from the iowa great lakes
Good morning, good afternoon, and good evening, campers!
We cover the history of Camp Foster almost beat-for-beat through the 20th century. It's a pretty exciting history since, as we say a few times in our episode, it's one of the oldest summer camps in the Midwest.
We wanted to look at the photos for this episode's blog and ask you to reflect on a few questions. The first photo is Thomas D. Foster, the founder of Camp Foster. But after that, at least two photos represent Camp Foster's history from 1914 to 2011. Think about these questions as you scroll through them:
1. Who are in the photos? How do the campers change as you move through the decades?
2. What kind of activities are they doing? Do you remember doing activities like these at camp? How do these activities help kids grow?
3. How do you see the change in the physical environment of the camp in the pictures? What stays the same?
4. Think back to any camp memories you have - maybe from school or a week-long summer camp. What do you remember most about those experiences? Did you try anything new? Who did you meet? What activities stuck with you? How did you feel as a child experiencing those?
We're incredibly grateful to Camp Foster and The Bedell Family YMCA for these outstanding photographs. Explore more on their 100th Anniversary Yearbook. The postcard is courtesy of Charlene Thomson. Send us your Camp Foster memories at hello@okobojiproject.com!

Watch Netflix's Crip Camp, a documentary about a camp for disabled children in the Catskills mountains. It beautifully showcases how summer camp can shape children's lives and our country long into the future.
